River Course

The Best Golf in Maryland

Hole by Hole Tour & Pro Tips

The River Course is consistently rated as having some of the best golf in Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area. Reopened at the beginning of 2011 after a thoughtful and extensive renovation, several holes were moved closer to the Chester River, and all bunkering was updated to create a windswept design that mimics the natural landscape of the site, optimizes shot values, and ensures superior conditioning. The River Course is open for play to the public.

HOLE #1
River Course

Par 4: Green 390 yards | Blue 336 yards | Gold 300 yards | White 238 yards

Handicap: Men’s 15 | Women’s 15

PRO TIP: Though it may be tempting to take out driver and get as close to the green as possible, any drive to the right side of the fairway brings water into play. Playing to the center of this green is the smart play as anything short and right brings the water into play.

HOLE #2
River Course

Par 3: Green 155 yards | Blue 142 yards | Gold 111 yards | White 92 yards

Handicap: Men’s 17 | Women’s 17

PRO TIP: A strong breeze off The Chester River helps to defend this Par 3 along with 3 greenside bunkers. Use the contour of the green to get close when the pin is on the left.

HOLE #3
River Course

Par 4: Green 444 yards | Blue 415 yards | Gold 383 yards | White 320 yards

Handicap: Men’s 5 | Women’s 5

PRO TIP: A draw off the tee is preferred, but a Driver is not required and can lead to a second shot from the rough as this Par 4 doglegs sharply to the left. The green plays uphill for the second shot and you’ll want to make sure of your distance as the green is split by a large slope.

HOLE #4
River Course

Par 4: Green 401 yards | Blue 367 yards | Gold 333 yards | White 280 yards

Handicap: Men’s 7 | Women’s 7

PRO TIP: Keeping the tee shot to the right center of the fairway leaves a shorter second shot, but get too close and it can bring the water into play. The second shot plays uphill and typically into the breeze, make sure you club up!

HOLE #5
River Course

Par 5: Green 551 yards | Blue 518 yards | Gold 475 yards | White 397 yards

Handicap: Men’s 11 | Women’s 11

PRO TIP: For just about everybody, this will be a 3 shot Par 5 as the fairway bends slightly to the left off the tee. You’ll work your way up the generous fairway for your second shot leaving you a short iron or wedge to a green guarded by front side bunkers. Take a moment to enjoy the scenery as you approach the green as it is truly one of the prettiest spots on the golf course with the Bay Bridge in the distance.

HOLE #6
River Course

Par 4: Green 374 yards | Blue 345 yards | Gold 322 yards | White 267 yards

Handicap: Men’s 13 | Women’s 13

PRO TIP: A straight drive is required as a hazard runs down most of the left side of the hole and the trees can cause trouble on the right. The green is one of the largest from back to front but is squeezed by a bunker on the left and water to the right and long of the green.

HOLE #7
River Course

Par 5: Green 538 yards | Blue 526 yards | Gold 433 yards | White 415 yards

Handicap: Men’s 1 | Women’s 1

PRO TIP: A Par 5 that requires more accuracy than length as the hole is treelined from the tee to the green. You’re third shot requires the correct distance as you are playing over an environmental hazard to a shallow green.

HOLE #8
River Course

Par 3: Green 204 yards | Blue 180 yards | Gold 160 yards | White 114 yards

Handicap: Men’s 9 | Women’s 9

PRO TIP: This Par 3 plays slightly uphill and is protected by a bunker on the left and two short and right of the green. A mid to long iron played into the center of this green with a two-putt par is all you want to do here.

HOLE #9
River Course

Par 4: Green 427 yards | Blue 392 yards | Gold 340 yards | White 286 yards

Handicap: Men’s 3 | Women’s 3

PRO TIP: If you’re playing this hole from the back tees, it will require a well struck tee shot, preferably a fade to avoid going through the fairway. From the fairway, the green is guarded by two bunkers and slopes heavily from back to front.

HOLE #10
River Course

Par 4: Green 478 yards | Blue 449 yards | Gold 418 yards | White 366 yards

Handicap: Men’s 2 | Women’s 2

PRO TIP: The longest Par 4 on the scorecard requires a drive with both length and accuracy as you don’t want to be playing a long second shot from the rough. The green slopes not only from back to front but also left to right. Use the contour to get close to a right pin but make sure any shot into the green leaves you putting uphill.

HOLE #11
River Course

Par 5: Green 569 yards | Blue 524 yards | Gold 470 yards | White 443 yards

Handicap: Men’s 10 | Women’s 10

PRO TIP: A Par 5 that is defended by hazard on both the left and right side of the tee shot, but to a generous fairway. You’re shot into the green is over a creek and bunkers to the left and right protect the front. A bailout area is available to the right of the green for the second shot of any big hitters.

HOLE #12
River Course

Par 4: Green 400 yards | Blue 361 yards | Gold 340 yards | White 288 yards

Handicap: Men’s 12 | Women’s 12

PRO TIP: You’re faced with a decision on this tee shot and depending on how aggressive you want to be, you may just end up on the green of this Par 4. For the rest of us mere mortals, you’re left with a short iron or wedge to the green after you avoid the hazard to the right with your tee shot.

HOLE #13
River Course

Par 3: Green 148 yards | Blue 131 yards | Gold 114 yards | White 77 yards

Handicap: Men’s 18 | Women’s 18

PRO TIP: A straightforward Par 3 that any shot to the middle of this greens leaves a good look at a birdie putt and avoids the bunkers to the left and right side of this green.

HOLE #14
River Course

Par 4: Green 419 yards | Blue 387 yards | Gold 356 yards | White 306 yards

Handicap: Men’s 8 | Women’s 8

PRO TIP: A solid Par 4 that requires a well-placed tee shot after you finish taking a picture of the beautiful vistas. On a clear day you can see all the way to Baltimore. Don’t go long on your second shot as any shot long into this green usually ends up in the environmental hazard behind the green.

HOLE #15
River Course

Par 4: Green 445 yards | Blue 413 yards | Gold 385 yards | White 331 yards

Handicap: Men’s 4 | Women’s 4

PRO TIP: One of the best holes on the golf course, this tee shot can be intimidating and bailing out to the left only leaves a longer second shot. Two solid shots and a two putt green, get your Par and get out.

HOLE #16
River Course

Par 3: Green 196 yards | Blue 174 yards | Gold 143 yards | White 116 yards

Handicap: Men’s 16 | Women’s 16

PRO TIP: A great Par 3 played over the water to a peninsula green. There’s a lot more room to land your ball than it looks so just take a deep breath and enjoy the views.

HOLE #17
River Course

Par 4: Green 372 yards | Blue 341 yards | Gold 312 yards | White 259 yards

Handicap: Men’s 14 | Women’s 14

PRO TIP: A driver is not required off the tee as the fairway runs out, more quickly on the right side of the fairway than the left. You’re second shot plays up the hill and you’ll want to be below the hole if the pin is on the left.

HOLE #18
River Course

Par 5: Green 585 yards | Blue 567 yards | Gold 466 yards | White 383 yards

Handicap: Men’s 6 | Women’s 6

PRO TIP: This great finishing hole is a Par 5 only reachable by two career shots. Make sure to leave your tee shot to left of the fairway bunker and you’re second shot must be to the right side of the fairway as a hazard hides on the left. You’re third shot to this green must be precise as there are 3 levels to this green.

Lakes Course

Tour & Hole by Hole Tips

The Lakes Course will challenge every aspect of your game. From the accuracy needed to tame the peninsular green on Number 6 to the spectacular finishing hole, the course will test the mettle of anyone who thinks they can carry the sand. Ranked several times as one of the best courses in the country for women, Queenstown Harbor’s Lakes Course offers the best golf in Maryland and is open to the public for play.

HOLE #1
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 362 yards | Blue 335 yards | Gold 301 yards | White 250 yards

Handicap: Men’s 15 | Women’s 15

PRO TIP: The starting hole offers a generous fairway to begin your day. If you carry your tee shot over the hill on the right side you’ll get an extra 30 yards out of your drive. The green is divided by a diagonal ridge so make sure of your distance.

HOLE #2
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 379 yards | Blue 345 yards | Gold 219 yards | White 204 yards

Handicap: Men’s 7 | Women’s 7

PRO TIP: This tee shot can be a tough one with the tee box being in a chute of trees and having to carry not only a hazard but also a large hump on the right side of the fairway. The left side of the green slopes severely so middle or right on this green is a safe play.

HOLE #3
Lakes Course

Par 3: Green 164 yards | Blue 142 yards | Gold 122 yards | White 102 yards

Handicap: Men’s 17 | Women’s 17

PRO TIP: The wind can be difficult to judge on this hole at times, Make sure you check the top of the trees to the right of the green to get a better of idea of how the will affect your ball. The green is sloped from back to front and from right to left. You can use the slopes to get it close on this green.

HOLE #4
Lakes Course

Par 5: Green 504 yards | Blue 475 yards | Gold 423 yards | White 391 yards

Handicap: Men’s 5 | Women’s 5

PRO TIP:A true risk/reward Par 5. With water guarding the entire right side of this hole, the question is…How much do you want to cut off? A bailout left leaves most with two more shots to the green, but to the bravest of souls a mid to short iron could be left for your second shot and an early round shot at an Eagle. The green is generous in size but a miss in any direction will leave a difficult up-and-down or even the threat of a lost ball.

HOLE #5
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 420 yards | Blue 395 yards | Gold 375 yards | White 345 yards

Handicap: Men’s 1 | Women’s 1

PRO TIP: A draw sets up perfect for this tee shot, but any ball at or left of the white rock will put you in good shape for your second shot. The second shot to this green always seems to play longer than the number and you don’t want to miss this green. A large slope halves the green and can repel your ball to the right.

HOLE #6
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 400 yards | Blue 375 yards | Gold 290 yards | White 230 yards

Handicap: Men’s 3 | Women’s 3

PRO TIP:A fade off the tee is preferred but not necessary to have a good look at this green. The green is protected on 3 sides by water, but the left side is most in play. Playing to the center of this green is never a bad idea.

HOLE #7
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 371 yards | Blue 343 yards | Gold 290 yards | White 259 yards

Handicap: Men’s 9 | Women’s 9

PRO TIP: Though it’s tempting to want to take your driver out and clear the bunker on the left, it’s not necessary and can leave you with a tough shot into the green if you don’t make it. Play out to the right and make sure to get your distance correct on the second shot as this green slopes considerably from back to front.

HOLE #8
Lakes Course

Par 3: Green 175 yards | Blue 151 yards | Gold 129 yards | White 99 yards

Handicap: Men’s 11 | Women’s 11

PRO TIP: A solid Par 3 that requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the bunker short right and long left. There are also 3 distinct levels to this green so make sure you know where the flag placement is.

HOLE #9
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 354 yards | Blue 325 yards | Gold 294 yards | White 241 yards

Handicap: Men’s 13 | Women’s 13

PRO TIP: A short Par 4 that can hopefully keep your low round going or help you to finish your 9 holes strong. For the bigger hitters, you can go right at the green and the wind will typically help you get it there. For the rest of us, just play it to the right center and at most you should have a short iron or wedge to this green. The green is split by a ridge so make sure you make to the correct side of it.

HOLE #10
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 407 yards | Blue 379 yards | Gold 350 yards | White 296 yards

Handicap: Men’s 8 | Women’s 8

PRO TIP:This straight away Par 4 has a relatively generous fairway and no obvious trouble to aware off. The second shot plays up hill and if you get too far left of the green you could end up in the water.

HOLE #11
Lakes Course

Par 3: Green 170 yards | Blue 140 yards | Gold 115 yards | White 95 yards

Handicap: Men’s 16 | Women’s 16

PRO TIP:This Par 3 would be very simple if not for the large pond guarding the front and right side of this green. With a bunker just over the green on the left side, a shot to the front left or deep middle of this green are you safe shots. Most balls short and right will end up in the “used pond balls” section of the Pro Shop.

HOLE #12
Lakes Course

Par 5: Green 520 yards | Blue 490 yards | Gold 440 yards | White 410 yards

Handicap: Men’s 12 | Women’s 12

PRO TIP: A great Par 5 that will reward a long draw off the tee with a chance to reach in two. Go too far left and you’ll be in the trees or blocked out by them. A good drive and mid-iron for your second shot should leave you with a wedge to this large green.

HOLE #13
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 450 yards | Blue 430 yards | Gold 375 yards | White 345 yards

Handicap: Men’s 2 | Women’s 2

PRO TIP: The longest Par 4 on the course typically plays into a left to right wind which pushes the tee sheet towards the bunker and tall grass on the right. A draw up the right center will not only fight the wind but catch a speed shot which should get you an extra 20 yards. This second shot is no time to relax, as the green is guarded by a large bunker on the left and the contours on the greens can push your ball away from or closer to the hole if you can use them correctly.

HOLE #14
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 415 yards | Blue 385 yards | Gold 335 yards | White 305 yards

Handicap: Men’s 4 | Women’s 4

PRO TIP: A slight draw is the best play on this hole but any tee shot in the fairway leaves you with a straight uphill shot to the green. Be sure to add an extra club to your calculation as you can’t feel the breeze from The Chester River up by the green. The green slopes severely from front to back so make sure you stay below the hole.

HOLE #15
Lakes Course

Par 5: Green 525 yards | Blue 495 yards | Gold 445 yards | White 415 yards

Handicap: Men’s 6 | Women’s 6

PRO TIP: Another Par 5 that you can challenge the water on the right with your tee shot. If you can avoid the bunkers on the left with your second shot, a third shot from the left side of the fairway will leave you the best angle into this long, skinny green that is protected in front and back by bunkers.

HOLE #16
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 375 yards | Blue 345 yards | Gold 295 yards | White 265 yards

Handicap: Men’s 14 | Women’s 14

PRO TIP: A straightaway Par 4 that favors a tee shot up the right side. It’s important to get your yardage right on the second shot right as bunkers short and long await to gather an errant shot.

HOLE #17
Lakes Course

Par 3: Green 210 yards | Blue 180 yards | Gold 145 yards | White 100 yards

Handicap: Men’s 10 | Women’s 10

PRO TIP: A tough Par 3 that requires a well struck long-iron or hybrid. The green is sloped from back to front and if the pin is in the back left, use the slope of the green to get it close. Don’t miss this green left.

HOLE #18
Lakes Course

Par 4: Green 368 yards | Blue 328 yards | Gold 303 yards | White 254 yards

Handicap: Men’s 18 | Women’s 18

PRO TIP: Some folks try to drive this green but it usually leaves them nothing but tree trouble. Play smart and hit your tee shot to the left of the fairway bunkers and you’ll be left with a short-iron or wedge to this green. The green slopes rather considerably from back to front so make sure you stay below the flag.
