From Lord of Baltimore to Best in Maryland

If you think “Queenstown Harbor” sounds regal, you’re correct. The land occupied by our golf course has a direct connection to royalty and is steeped in history. Here’s the full story and history of Queenstown Harbor.

Historically named “My Lord’s Gift,” the land was given to Henry deCoursey by Cecil Calvert in the 1600s as a reward for his services. deCoursey, a surveyor for Calvert (the second Lord of Baltimore), placed his thumbprint on a map was granted all of the land under his thumb. That’s why the territory was known as the “thumb grant” for hundreds of years.

When the owners of The Brick Companies found the land in the 1970s, it was being used as a dairy farm and working crop fields. The Brick Companies executives decided to build a golf course so they could share the beauty of the land and wildlife with the public.

During construction of the course, experts conducted a large archaeological dig under the original DeCoursey home site, and unearthed and historically preserved millions of artifacts from the era. Many of these artifacts are displayed in the corporate headquarters of The Brick Companies in Edgewater, Md., and many more were donated to the Maryland Historic Trust.

A Commitment To Our Land

At Queenstown Harbor, we truly believe that our land is part golf course and part wildlife sanctuary, and we base our decisions on being good stewards of the land we work and play on.

We have been a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 2008, and our turf experts employ best management practices and Integrated Pest Management to minimize inputs at our site. Wildlife habitat creation, water conservation and reduced pesticide usage are also vital to maintaining the integrity of our land.

Queenstown Harbor has been recognized for its extensive conservation efforts, and even won the “Environmental Leader in Golf Award” from Golf Digest and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Everyone on the Queenstown Harbor team is a seasoned and experienced professional who cares most about giving you the best golf experience.

John Anderes III


Director of Golf & Grounds

John Anderes is Director of Golf and Grounds at Queenstown Harbor, responsible for overseeing all course activities.

John's love of golf began more than 25 years ago when he worked on the turf staff at a local golf course during high school. Since then, he has worked at many courses in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Woodmore, Columbia and Hunters Oak Country Clubs; The Golf Club at South River and Queenstown Harbor, mostly as an Assistant Superintendent and a Head Superintendent and now Director of Golf and Grounds.

John has a BS in Landscape Architecture with an emphasis on Golf Design and Agronomy from West Virginia University and a Turfgrass Management certificate from Cornell University. He lives on the Eastern Shore with his wife and three children.

Erin Stolle

Director of Events and Hospitality

In the spring of 2018, we were very fortunate to add Erin to our team to lead our Events and Hospitality team. With a degree in Hospitality Management from Johnson & Wales University, Erin possess 15+ years in Hotel/Resort Management.

She has planned and executed meetings and events from 5-5000 in locations such as The Greenbrier in West Virginia, The Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort in West Virginia, several locations in Washington DC and Annapolis, MD.

When she’s not at work, she is busy taking care of her two children Tucker & Grace, supporting her husband Brian who is a Washington DC Fire Fighter and playing with their two dogs, June & Tank.

Mike Sabol


Pro Shop Manager & Head Golf Professional

Mike Sabol is Queenstown Harbor's Head Golf Professional and manages the course Pro Shop. Passionate about the game, he considers himself lucky to do what he loves for a living.

Mike started playing golf in high school and admits his competitive nature was a significant factor in pushing him to play and practice as much as possible. He became completely addicted to the game and when he found out he could turn it into a career, he was "sold."

Mike loves being around the game of golf – talking about it, watching it and teaching people. He also has a lot of pride in the Queenstown Course, and can offer excellent recommendations for any golf product – from shoes to clubs to the best ball for your game.

Mike has a degree in professional golf management from Penn State University. He is married with two children and loves golfing and going to the beach in his free time.

Nick Brandt


Superintendent, River Course

Nick Brandt is Superintendent of the River Course and has been with The Brick Companies since 2002. Prior to joining the Queenstown Harbor staff, he worked at Upland Golf Club as an assistant superintendent for two years, and was there for the construction and grow-in of the course.

Nick enjoys experiencing every season at Queenstown Harbor, and loves spring and the transformation of the course from dormancy into a lush green vista best of all.

Nick is married and has three daughters. In his free time, he golfs, travels and tinkers around the house.

"I love the smell of fresh-cut grass and I love solving problems. Every year is different and we are at the mercy of Mother Nature and her ever-changing demeanor."

Jason Neal


Superintendent, Lakes Course

Jason Neal is Superintendent of the Lakes Course, where he loves the day-to-day challenges of working outside, and where he has the opportunity to make every guest experience exceptional.

Jason's love for the game began more than 25 years ago, when he started playing in the junior golf program of a local course near his home at age 12. When he turned 16, he got a job on the maintenance crew, and since then, the only job he has ever had has been on a golf course.

Jason is married and has two children, and loves to golf, fish and spend time with family and friends.

"I love being outside on this gorgeous property and playing a part in making it a beautiful place for our guests to enjoy."

Sales and Event Planning Assistant

We are pleased to welcome Shelly Morgan as our Events and Sales Assistant. Shelly has been with The Brick Companies at Queenstown Harbor for over ten years, starting out in the food and beverage department. Her hard work and attention to detail along with her current training has landed her as a very valuable addition to our event planning and sales team. In her spare time she is a fulltime student at Salisbury University pursuing a degree in Communications.

Jorge Alvarez

Queenstown Harbor is very excited to add Jorge Alvarez to our fabulous management team as he will head up all Food and Beverage operations as our Tavern Manager. Jorge has over 35 years in the Hotel/ Restaurant industry including Executive Chef Colonial Williamsburg foundation, GM of food services for the Pentagon, Washington Navy yard, Patuxent and Indian Head naval air bases. He has received accolades from Bon Appetite, Food and Wine, and Wine Spectator magazines for excellence in food preparation and wine pairings. Jorge was one of six Virginia Chefs invited to cook for the International “Feed the Children” foundation dinner in Washington DC. We are excited to have Jorge create new an exciting experiences for our Tavern patrons, golfing guests, and cottage guests alike.
