Queenstown Harbor Completes Major Bunker Renovation on Lakes and River Courses

Queenstown, MD – June 5, 2025 – Queenstown Harbor, one of Maryland’s premier public golf destinations on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, proudly announces the completion of an extensive bunker renovation across both its Lakes and River courses. The project marks a significant investment in the facility’s long-term playability and course aesthetics, reinforcing Queenstown Harbor’s commitment to providing a top-tier golf experience for players of all skill levels.

Completed in December 2024, The Lakes Course, ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 50 Public Course for Women, had forty-two traditional bunkers removed and replaced with 18 grass-faced, flat-bottom bunkers.

Completed in May 2025, The River Course, nestled along the mouth of the Chester River, where it flows into the Chesapeake Bay, features high-flash white sand and a striking, elevated design with the perfect mix of tree-lined fairways and open, links-style holes, creating both variety and challenge.

The extensive renovation project modernized each bunker using state-of-the-art construction techniques, including improved drainage systems and premium sand for consistent play conditions. Golfers will immediately notice enhanced bunker visibility, cleaner sightlines, and more strategic shot values throughout both layouts.

“This project has been years in the making,” said Nick Brandt, Senior Director of Golf & Grounds at Queenstown Harbor. “By updating every bunker on both courses, we’ve dramatically improved playability, visual appeal, and year-round maintenance efficiency. Whether you’re here for a tournament or a weekday round, the course is in great shape and plays differently than ever before.”

The renovations were led in collaboration with golf course architect Joel Weiman and golf course construction company McDonald & Sons.  Every new bunker aligns with modern golf course design principles while preserving the character of each hole. In addition to the visual and functional improvements, the upgrades reduce maintenance needs, enabling the grounds crew to focus more on turf health and overall conditioning.

The Lakes and River courses are both renowned for their scenic views within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. These latest improvements further elevate the courses’ status as a must-play destination for local golfers and visitors alike.

“Our guests are already sharing how much more enjoyable the course is playing with the new bunkers,” said Mike Sabol, Director of Golf. “They’re faster to drain after storms, easier to maintain, and offer better consistency across both courses.”

The bunker project is part of Queenstown Harbor’s broader effort to invest in quality, innovation, and guest satisfaction. In 2025, the facility also added a year-round covered Toptracer driving range, expanding its appeal for practice and year-round golf in the mid-Atlantic Region.
